Reading Test 9
SECTION 1: A satisfied patient
Dear Dr Moor and Staff:
I was a patient at your hospital about two weeks ago. I would like to give you som feedback about my experience. It is probably never really pleasant for any patient to be admitted to a hospital for any reason, but in a strange way, it was for me. Let me explain.
I was at home as usual on a Saturday night. I had just had dinner with my wife and two children. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. My first thought was that it was just heartburn, but the pain became more intense. My wife was in the other room, so I tried to just keep quiet and deal with whatever was happening to me. However, my daughter and son walked in to see me doubled over in excruciating pain, clutching my chest. My daughter ran to get my wife, who ran into the room, gasped, and asked me if I was all right. I couldn't even speak at that point, so she grabbed my son's cell phone and dialled 911. The ambulance was there within half an hour, and I was taken to your hospital here in Toronto.
My previous experiences in hospital emergency waiting rooms had never been all too positive. It was always about waiting for hours in order to be seen by a doctor. However, this time it was completely different. In spite of the waiting room being quite full when I arrived, I was wheeled into the emergency room within moments. I guess they figured I was the most serious case among the lot. Dr Moore, you and your assistant (I've forgotten his name) came to me right away, did some quick introductions, and then proceeded to do a battery of tests. I was impressed by your professionalism, care, and concern, and I knew that I was going to be okay.
As it turned out, my original self-diagnosis was the correct one, although I feel quite embarassed by havig put everyone through such panic. You advised me to stay away from foods that would conribute to heartburn, and I heed your advice everyday.
I would like to express my utmost appreciation for having done such a great job of looking after my well-being. You have restored my faith in the health care system in our city and our province.
Keep up the great work, Dr Moore and team!
Gratefully,
Mick Hippendom

SECTION 3: Reading for Information
Camping
A. Canadians love doing outdoor activities. There is something fun and interesting to do in every season of the year, in every part of this country. One of our favourite outdoor summer activities is camping. Millions of Canadians enjoy camping in national and provincial parks, as well as in privately owned campgrounds, every year. From coast to coast, there are camping facilities that range from simple to full service. If we can keep th following few points in mind while we are camping, we can maximize the enjoyment of the experince, for ourselves, and for others.
B. One very important point to keep in mind when we are camping is that we are most often in an area of wilderness. We should be aware that this wilderness is home to plants and animals. We should be careful not to disturb their environment. Basically, we are uninvited guests in their home, so we should do all we can to minimize our impact. For instance, we should never litter the area with our garbage. We should also read the signs and warnings regarding such information as bears in the area. One extremely important point to keep in mind is to never try interacting with wild animals. Each year, dozens of people are injured, even killed because they do not heed this advice.
C. Fires are one of the most destructive forces. They can be caused naturally, such as by a lightning strike, or by humans. One careless camper who has forgotten to put out a campfire can be responsible for burining down an entire forest. Every year, forest fires occur by the hundreds due to natural and human causes. That is especially true in western Canada, where thousands of hectares of forest are destroyed through fire annually. It is therefore imperative that, assuming there is no campfire ban in place, you ensure your campfire is extinguished properly before leaving your campsite. Diligently ensuring that the fire is absolutely out cannot be overstated.
D. One more important point to remember is that all campers, including you, are there for an enjoyable experience. Nobody wants to camp next to a noisy, rude group of people. It can turn a pleasant weekend experience away from the city into a miserable memory. For that reason, you should think about you, and keep the noise to a minimum. If you can keep this point, and all the points mentioned in this artilce, in mind, you and all other campers will have a wonderful camping experience.

SECTION 4: Reading for Viewpoints: The Value of a University Education
One of the most crucial decisions that high school students have to make is whether or not to pursue a university degree after obtaining their high school diploma. Then, once a student has decided to pursue a degree, a major mus also be chosen. It can be quite stressful for a student, as well as the parents, to weigh the pros and cons of continuing on to university. While it is clearly not an easy decision, I feel that there are compelling reasons to pursue a degree after high school.
The first reason is that a university degre increases employment prospects. Not only that, the kinds of employment that one will be offered tend to be better in terms of position, prestige, and salary. For instance, anyone wanting to become a pysician has no choice but to obtain a university degree prior to being able to practice medicine. There is no way around it, if one is set on becoming a physician.
Granted, a decade of post-secondary studies is not uncommon for anyone seeking to become a medical practitioner specializing in one area of medicine. Becoming a physician requires years of dedicated studying as well as practical training. That said, the rewards in terms of status and salary cannot be denied.
The second compelling reason is that, in my opinion, a university degree increases our intelligence. There ar so many things that one can learn at university that one cannot learn anywhere else. For example, if one wants to study astronomy, then university is the perfect place to study that field in depth. The knowledgeable university professors dedicate themselves to educating eager students on the characteristics of the universe, the solar system, our galaxy, and everything related.
A university is a concentration of specific knowledge, on any given field depending on the university itself. It would be impossible to learn even half of what one could learn at university anywhere else.
I really believe that obtaining a university degree after highschool is a wise decision. Not only does one learn many things that contribute to one becoming a more intelligent being, one also greatly improves one's chances of landing desirable employment upon graduation. It is difficult to argue with such reasons when one observes the success within society of those of us who choose to pursue a university education. If more people decide to get a university degree after high school, our society would be more intelligent, and more people would have prestigious jobs.
